Lily is a recent first-class graduate from Bath Spa University having studied BA (Hons) Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors specialising in knit. She has a playful, fun and eclectic approach to knitwear design, experimenting with structural and textural techniques alongside graphic imagery and text on both Dubied and domestic knit machines. The eccentricities of human nature, from conversations and folklore to collecting old or pretty things, are a constant source of inspiration for her sideways approach to contemporary textile design.
'(what) a load of old tat', draws on the emotional and nostalgic value that old objects can hold, whether through genuine links to a specific item or through emotional resonance. Growing up I have many treasured memories of rummaging through my Grandma’s collections of old objects that were hidden away in cupboard drawers or in boxes, as well as many hours spent in dusty antique shops and auction rooms with my parents, just the smell of dust and musty old buildings brings back such comforting nostalgic feelings. This collection of knitted textile designs for fashion celebrates the value of the comforting nostalgia of old things in a contemporary textile context. By approaching the collection through a fashion knitwear context, the playful and nostalgic designs can also provide a sense of comfort through the use of knit; which as a medium has long been associated with comfort and nostalgia
'What's the forecast?' is a knitted textile collection for fashion inspired by conversations I had about the weather with customers over the summer when working as an ice cream seller in a local park. When chatting with customers, no matter whether the forecast was good or bad the topic of the weather would come up, this also led to me hearing funny idioms and folklore about the weather, such as when cows lay down it’s going to rain, or flying ants mean thunderstorms are on the way. These funny sayings and the British obsession with the weather has inspired me to create a collection of knitted textiles that explore the weather, from folklore and forecasting methods to sun and storms, informed by my conversations with people, forecasting methods and typical British weather events. The collection is a playful, slightly odd exploration of the weather using textural, experimental and graphic techniques in knit on both domestic and Dubied machines to form a collection reminiscent of nostalgic, kitschy, novelty vintage jumpers. The project features experimental exploration in my practice including encapsulating lasercut embellishments within knit.
Don't be silly, blow out the candles and celebrate for celebration's sake! Finding ways to celebrate the little things, or even just nothing at all to bring some joy, colour and cake into daily life drew me to the concept of unbirthdays, the perfect excuse for anyone to celebrate on 364 days of the year. The project is a humorous and slightly sarcastic take on the iconic traditional birthday party, with bright colours, stacks of sandwiches and of course, cake!
