About
Yafei was born in China in the late 1990s, and her experiences growing up in a rapidly changing world have had a profound impact on her artistic journey. Through her work, she explores the complex relationship between individuals and their surroundings, and examine the connections between our inner and outer worlds.
Through a variety of media including illustration, graphic novels, experimental animation, and installation, she continues to explore new ways of expressing herself and connecting with audiences. Yafei’s work often incorporates elements of absurdity and humor, inviting viewers to engage with my art on multiple levels. Ultimately, her goal is to inspire people to think more deeply about the future of humanity and our place in the universe.
After obtaining BFA and MFA degrees in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Yafei Liu currently works as a freelance illustrator and art educator in McLean, VA.
"Whispers of Departure" in Chinese "絮语" means continuous and soft-spoken communication. Using a multi-page sequential book in comics format, the story revolves around the protagonist's escape from her hometown within a specific social context. Throughout the journey, the protagonist engages in an internal dialogue, discussing the changes in their surrounding environment and inner thoughts.
