About
Rune Callewaert is a stop motion animator and director, with experience in graphic design and art direction. He focuses on narrative cinema, exploring relational tensions between characters in externalized and evocative worlds. On a technical level, he designs and builds his own sets and puppets, often trying to achieve a baroque and macabre, but also slightly humorous atmosphere within his films. He experiments with different techniques to add emotionality to these worlds. Themes surrounding art history, decadence and classical music feature frequently in his work.
In '70s Flanders, a housewife seeks comfort in a peculiar and personal specimen kept close by her husband. With newfound confidence and the specimen - her own discarded tapeworm - as a friend, she thinks of a way out of her unhappy marriage. When her husband’s jealousy takes a turn for the worst, she plots revenge and escapes the repressive household. An absurd, but sincere stop-motion fable.

The Masque of the Red Death
When the eccentric owner of a bustling nightclub keeps an eye on his business, his gaze falls on a mysterious lady dressed in red whom he wants to make his own at all costs. While the other guests at the club lose themselves in decadence, the owner remains spellbound by the lady and his inner demons. Will he risk to lose it all? The Masque of the Red Death is a stop-motion allegory about lust, decadence and decay. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) in which a bloody pestilence manages to invade a masked ball in a locked castle.
