Raveena Batham
Architect | Product designer | Illustrator
As an architect turned designer, Raveena’s professional journey has revolved around the struggle between designing for personal fulfilment and contributing to the greater good of society and later discovering that true contentment lies in finding the right balance between these seemingly conflicting aspirations.
In her work, she tries to integrate the principles of design therapy with a touch of fantasy, while firmly believing that fantasy holds the potential to manifest into reality, thus influencing her work with elements of whimsy and wonder. Her exploration of design therapy is driven by a curiosity about its unique capabilities compared to traditional art therapy and is seeking answers to understanding what design can offer that sets it apart from other therapeutic modalities.
Raveena believes that informed and thoughtful design possesses the power to spark meaningful conversations and instigate a transformative change. Through her work, she tries to leverage the inherent potential of design to address pressing societal issues like mental well-being and specifically, the profound impact of grief on an individual. Her work so focuses on creating a safe space for discussing these issues openly, using products and furniture.
As she continues to navigate the intersection of design, therapy, and societal impact, Raveena remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of creative expression and fostering dialogue that has the potential to shape a better world for future generations.
Bubbaa: Your grief companion® is a physical manifestation of a comforting character. It is a series of design therapy tools designed to help children, particularly those aged 6 to 10, cope with the loss of a parent or loved one. Inspired by personal experiences of feeling helpless in the face of grief, Bubbaa® aims to provide comfort and support during the early stages of therapy. Product 1: The first product of Bubbaa® the Companion, functions as a voice recorder, allowing children aged 6-10 to express their feelings safely and serves as a night light, echoing Victor Hugo's sentiment: "Even the darkest night will end, and the sun will rise." Product 2: The second product, “Bubbaa®’s Rest,” is designed as play-furniture for therapy sessions, featuring a huggable form with interchangeable parts to encourage tactile interaction and encourage children to build their own Bubbaa, adding a sense of safety and comfort to the play therapy room. Product 3: Its second version aids emotional expression through role play, enabling children to project their feelings onto Bubbaa®, thus facilitating therapeutic dialogue. Product 4: “Bubbaa®’s Hope” is a floor lamp and the fourth product in the Bubbaa series, marking the first custom design tailored for a client. The client, who recently became a new mother, lost her father a few years ago under unfortunate circumstances. The design of the lamp is inspired by her father's favourite flower, the marigold. It features five marigold flowers, symbolising their tight-knit family bond, including her father.
