Rachel Soebekti is a recent Masters of Architecture Graduate from the University of Melbourne with a strong advocacy for Co-Design and Community led Practice.
Published in Dezeen, her award winning research has delved into role Architecture, Building and Place Making in shaping Community Agency and Confidence.
In a world of increasing Capitalist Pressure, her work persistently asks the question. 'Who are we Designing for and how are they represented in our Public Space?'
Applying Strategies of Place-Based Architecture and Commons Thinking to Civic Building Design, this project aimed to imagine a new Public Library, defined and physically built by its Community. As a reaction to the rapid Commercialisation of Middle Ring Suburbs, 'Yours, Mine, Ours' challenged the social disconnect caused by hostile commercial city planning. In response, this project turned to the process of Construction and Codesign as opportunity to foster neighbourhood relationships through facilitated design activities and onsite construction workshops. Concluding that a genuine connection to place making and perceived site access could redefine a community's 'right' to occupy and space, Yours, Mine. Ours. Considers the responsibility of practising architects exists not just in the physicality of architectural form, but the strength of community connection.
