About

Hi, I’m Mikayla Gao, a Los Angeles-based graphic designer specializing in brand identity and experience design.

In my hometown, there is a philosophy that speaks of the Five Elements. From an early age, I have always understood that I am missing the element of wood. This belief sparked in me a journey of personal discovery and drove me towards nature and greenery. I have learned strength from the forest, resilience from the trees, and power from the seeds. These are now essential qualities for me as an individual.

The forest represents growth and harmony while also being a source of infinite inspiration. It’s a place where I find balance and enrichment. Just as the forest adapts and flourishes, I strive to develop creative resilient design solutions that embody these same qualities. Let’s step into the forest together.

Aquarium of the Pacific is Southern California’s largest and fourth most-attended aquarium. I developed and changed the original name to "The Pacific Aquarium" for better legibility and easier memorization. The goal is to create a “window" between the audience and nature, inviting visitors to learn more about marine life and the vision of the Pacific Aquarium. By connecting the community with the surrounding marine habitat, the increased audience engagement allowed visitors to explore and better understand their impact on the environment.

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is a renowned cultural and educational nonprofit institution located in Pasadena, California. The brand strategy is to offer an inclusive and transformative experience where nature, history, and art converge. The Huntington will be a gateway to learning, exploration, and inspiration for all visitors.
