About

Recently graduated from Teesside University with First Class Honours in Fine Art.

My exploratory and experimental practice is process orientated, questioning which is more meaningful… the physical act of making or the outcome? Using bold colour, I cross the boundaries between painting, sculpture and textiles. I am passionate about the arts in the context of health, exploring the impact on both the artist as the maker and the audience as the beholder. Recently the meditative actions of wrapping, binding, hooking and knotting have become an integral part of my work as I investigate the link between the hands, brain and wellbeing. Using these laboured, rhythmic and repetitive methods fosters an intimate relationship with my materials, allowing for complete immersion in the process. My work isn’t permanent, it evolves and changes over time, merging and connecting with the place in which it is installed. I am interested in the idea of destruction, renewal and reinvention as a means of healing.

Mental Mass is an installation that investigates the impact of laboured and methodical methods of making on the brain. Thousands of individual pieces of wool and felt are hand cut and applied into sculptural forms using methods of wrapping, hooking, binding and knotting. Exploring touch and mental connection with the environment, a dialogue is composed through the juxtaposition of painting directly onto the floor and walls, ‘drawing’ in mid air with a sculpture that dominates the central space and a soft textile sculpture that clings onto the wall. Part of the work is entwined with the pipework of the building whilst trails of wool hang down from elements of the sculptures making a bond with the floor.
