This silent picturebook reflects on the Irish seascape. With 90% of its territory lying within the seas and currently less than 10% of it protected, this story champions the responsibility of caring. This lack of protection means that trawling ships overharvest the seas that have held such a connection within local cultures. A local fisherman, the threat of a barren sea and a trawling ship polluting his home engage children globally to empathise with a story that is not solely unique to Ireland. Highlighting the importance of stewardship and preserving the magical and diverse seas.
With pastels, paints and pencils, Under Your Nose challenges perceptions of our least engaged sense. This book explores an alternative history of the fragrance history from the very beginning of time through over 100 illustrated pages that open up to be 1 meter wide. Illustrations critique the ways the perfumery industry has historically shaped the idea of the other - and continues to shape the other through seen, spoken and scented languages. Interested by acts of archiving and who archives them, I disseminate rich narratives to children that draw upon the fragrant from the big bang through to Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Rome, France and then eventually where we are today. Displaying the care and cruelty that the world has offered. Highlighting the industries roots and ties to colonialism and orientalism, this narrative offers another perspective that champions histories of colour.
