Cherish Tong (b. 2002), born and based in Singapore, is an emerging artist pursuing her education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Cherish honed her skills in a wide range of mediums, including paintings, installation art, photography, and film-making. In her practice, Cherish delves into works immersed in nature that attempt to reflect the profundity and complexity of beauty.
Cherish has engaged in a spectrum of collaborations, including the “Re:count-1” showcase at the Selegie Arts Centre, the “Future Landscapes” exhibition in collaboration with the Victorian College of the Arts, and a recent digital mural commission by the National Library Board as well as "PLAY SCAPES," AN ACTIVITY WITH SPD. Cherish has also interned at Gallery 1819 and
LivingwithArt Singapore.
Inflorescence stems from a transitional moment where the artist tries to immerse in the presence of stages in-between Life and Death; Decay. As she contemplates and celebrates the ephemeral beauty of nature using its essence. The nature of human consciousness, which admires beauty, wanting to prolong and go against the inevitable fate of mortality. Within the artwork, the artist gathers flowers from bouquets which was once desired for their beauty, now wasted away after its role has been carried out, creating a blend that encapsulates the essences. She documents portraits of the deceased that were used, setting a new stage for nature to blossom once again in the hands of mankind. The work explores the materiality of nature that eventually, still fades away where we learn to treasure each fleeting moment and find comfort in nature’s world of “eternal beauty”.
