I am motivated by the challenge of redefining utilitarian fashion, with a special focus on sustainable practices, including the use of biodegradable materials, fostering product longevity, and enhancing aesthetic value.
My BA graduate collection, "Echoes of Concealment," explored the theme of camouflage and concealment while investigating the potential applications of algae-based bio-material in fashion design. Central to my design journey has been navigating the balance between conformity and rebellion, experimenting with innovative materials, and maintaining a deep respect for history and craftsmanship.
At the heart of the collection lies an exploration of sustainability through the development of algae-based bio-material and its potential applications in fashion design. The water solubility of the material, applied in the context of fashion, either creates an obstacle due to its temporality or an opportunity for visual transformations, while also reducing the harmful traces of the industry. The growing impacts of political conflicts in recent years and the historical role of wars as catalysts for innovation led me to revisit history to explore concealment techniques and the sociological effect of the World Wars. The contrasts within the collection challenge the conventional purpose of camouflage, symbolising the inherent vulnerability we feel when concealing facets of our identity, leaving us paradoxically exposed.
