About

My name is Kate Hynes, I am an artist from Dublin, Ireland. I recently graduated with first-class honours from an MFA in Fine Art from NCAD. My work is often personal in nature, drawing inspiration from past experiences, sometimes traumatic, often mundane. It attempts to explore this with levity. Exploring topics such as reproduction, madness, female sexuality and the domestic realm. The violence of birth and new motherhood is a current focus. The dichotomy between the nurturing nature of this time against the reality of an inherent violence of contained within. I have an interdisciplinary practice which encompasses painting, drawing, performance and animation. Fluidity and movement are very important, moving between the unspecific and the specific. Imperfection and spontaneity taking priority. For this reason I am drawn to mediums such as watercolours, ink, and gouache. I like their unpredictable nature, the movement between liberality and refinement. Creating animations from paintings is something I’m enjoying at the moment. The quick nature of the medium allows for repetition and the repetition can become meditative much like domestic labour.
