About
Hello!I'm Shubhangi (Shilp Kalaa), an Indian visual communicator and urban designer currently based in London. My work resides at the intersection of intricate drawing and a diverse artistic focus, creating a unique dialogue between my image-making practice and the subjects I explore.Using tools like pens on paper, paper-making, found objects, and visual mark-making, I craft scenes that develop a visually coded language, deeply engaging with themes often centered around natural elements and the lived environments of people. My process is rooted in active observation, deep seeing, and thorough research, often treating the subject itself as a medium. I find inspiration while walking through streets—eyes wide open, notebook in hand—cataloging the typologies of patterns at a scale that most may overlook. The core of my practice lies in capturing fascination as a means to convey complex ideas and narratives, drawing people in and inviting meaningful conversations.
For over a year, I undertook a site-specific project focused on city mosses, drawing inspiration from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book 'Gathering Moss'. This project adopts an ethnoecological approach to understand the moss world, reflecting on the state of cities within the Anthropocene environment. It begins by questioning: Do we truly see what exists around us? Do we notice nature? How often do we slow down to recognize our surroundings? What is our relationship with the environment? Can we re-learn to see? And if we do, what might we discover? Let’s explore… The final drawing in the project offers a close-up view of mosses resting atop a brick in a boundary wall. This scene invites a moment of pause, urging us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and vitality that nature offers, even in the most unexpected places, amidst our fast-paced world.
