About

Judy Kong is a multimedia artist, born in Hong Kong and based in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT University).  She works with video, installations, sound, painting, and poetry. She draws inspiration from authentic affects and bodily experience. She is obsessed with lightness, darkness, and color. Judy’s work shaped by affective landscape and subjective experience, creates an inner space between poetic and conceptual that evokes feelings, emotions, and spiritual experience. She engages with subjects such as authenticity, self-immanence, cultural geography, and psychology through an empathic lens. Her work seeks to find common ground in artistic experiences by inviting people to perceive a space and resonate affectively. Judy had her first solo exhibition in Australia at First Site Gallery, Melbourne. She has also exhibited at institutions, including the Hong Kong Art Centre and Testing Ground Melbourne.

sinking here, Floating there

When I began my migration, arriving here meant leaving there. This cycle is endless.
"Sinking Here, Floating There" is a project that explores the affective landscape of personal migration experiences, focusing on the cycle of attachment and detachment from places, family, and cultural values. The project draws inspiration from the bodily experience of walking in water, portraying a body existing in two spaces—above the water and underneath it —and the sensation of hearing sounds both in the air and underwater. The contrast between these elements serves as a metaphor for complex emotions, such as unfamiliarity and nostalgia, associated with being in between.
This artwork assembles both poetic and conceptual dimensions to create a video and sound installation, exploring time-based, luminous, spatial, and text-based mediums to depict personal experiences and affective landscapes in a space. It invites the audience to adopt a first-person perspective, creating an immersive experience that evokes physiological and psychological responses, fostering empathy.
