Interlaced Identities combines textile traditions and materials from a traditional Transylvanian region I am connected to with my current professional context as a resident in Scotland and the UK. Through interviews with local people of the Kalotaszeg region, I identified aspects of a vanishing vernacular culture and textile tradition. My concept was informed by the blend of these cultures. This is evident in my choice to pair locally sourced hemp twine and thread from Kalotaszeg with wool, a characteristic Scottish material. Technical development of the collection included exploring the integration of wool and hemp yarns within the same warp. I layered textural woven structures with hand and machine embellishments, using hand stitching, figured details, discharge printing techniques, and floral inspired embroidery. I believe this project will raise awareness of disappearing traditions and how these technologies can inform modern practice and promote research in sustainable alternatives for the textile industry.
