Nahuel is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of biology and computation with a focus on emergence, complexity, and the nature of intelligence.His practice makes use of software-hardware-wetware hybrids to find innovative ways for traditional computing systems to interact with biological entities. Utilizing sensor arrays and artificial intelligence algorithms, Nahuel’s work highlights the growing convergence of natural and computing sciences. This approach, which he terms ‘computing bio art’, blurs the lines between living and non-living information processing systems and yields two kinds of outputs:- By examining how technology interacts with the more-than-human world, Nahuel’s work reveals unexpected insights about our digital tools and their impact on society and nature. This prompts us to reconsider our relationship with technology.- Through reimagining how we can use technology, Nahuel creates experimental models that suggest new ways of living. Culture Mining: an abusive relationship between a computer system and a cyanobacteria colony’ consists of a dialogue between two information processing systems. The computing system monitors and manipulates the culture’s conditions of growth. The computer gathers data from multiple sensors, and modifies the temperature, motility and light conditions of the cyanobacteria colony. The cyanobacteria moves in order to get most sunlight and the best temperature conditions for growth. Because this system is programmed to maximize the gathering of movement data, the computer carries out a cycle of care and stress upon the cyanobacteria, forcing it to be in constant motion.
