About
I am a Singaporean designer currently based in Glasgow, Scotland. I take a systematic, critical and purposeful approach to design. Creative problem solving, research and visual experimentation drive my work. I have a keen interest in typography and publication design, but my practice also includes art direction, type design, identity systems, digital design and motion design.
Block is a semi-modular and variable typeface inspired by Singapore’s public housing blocks. Its semi-modularity is informed by the pre-fabrication techniques used to build the brutalist building blocks. Humanist forms are sculpted around structures constructed with a rigid set of modules. Its legibility makes it a versatile workhorse typeface. A 650mm × 550mm sculpture of a concrete uppercase “G” with exposed steel rebar was created as an extension of the type specimen. The exposed rebar in the concrete sculpture reflects the modules used to create the Block typeface. The choice of materials is informed by the brutalist origins of the Block typeface.
