About

Jack (Quyen) Hoac is a graphic designer based in Chicago. With a BFA degree from School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), he also refers to himself as an interdisciplinary artist to make things spicier. He is currently in a love triangle with brand identity and digital illustration. His work explores the bridge between graphic design and fine arts. He loves putting himself in the shoes of a painter when it comes to experimenting with type and pushing the limits of typography.

Through this project, I wanted to explore the bridge between graphic design and fine art. Considering that ArtBash is an annual exhibition celebrating every freshman’s journey in Contemporary Practices Department at School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), I decided to put myself in the position of a first-year student to create an identity that can encapsulate their spirit and energy. I wanted to design in the same way that an artist would create their artwork, allowing myself to experiment and put aside certain rules and design conventions, especially when it comes to typography. In order to capture the unapologetic edge exuded from every freshman and the collective energy of Contemporary Practices (CP), I utilized an explosive palette of vibrant colors for the branding of ArtBash 2024. For the typographic treatment throughout this identity, the letterforms are digitally altered and layered on top of one another, emulating how a CP student would go through endless explorations and try on multiple practices throughout their first year at SAIC. These two elements work together to create an expressive and contemporary design system.
