About
Yuan is a contemporary jewellery and ceramic artist based in Sydney, Australia. Grounded in her cultural background and lived experiences, her practice examines the dynamic relationships between material, culture and society, particularly how Asian narratives can be articulated through material-led experimentation. Through both traditional and emergent processes, she explores design as a critical tool for reinterpreting heritage within contemporary contexts.
Chapter 57 transforms discarded seashell into wearable jewellery through material experiments drawing on Chinese alchemy. Integrating laser engraving and traditional knots, the project examines how material innovation, cultural heritage, and contemporary technologies interdependently shape identity. It encourages diasporic communities to reconnect with their culture roots and explore notions of cultural identity and belonging among younger generations, while reflecting on sustainability by reconsidering finite resources and envisioning harmonious futures between humans and nature.
