Yoon Ju Chung is a fashion practitioner, researcher and educator working across fashion, material culture and practice-based research. Her work explores how people experience, interpret and communicate meaning through materials and the body. Moving between drawing, making and material experimentation, she approaches creative practice as a way of thinking and generating knowledge. Her current work focuses on fashion artefacts and wearable objects, exploring language, cultural memory, materiality and embodied experience. She recently completed an MA in Fashion Artefact at London College of Fashion, UAL. She also holds a doctorate in Fashion Design and has over ten years of experience teaching fashion and design in higher education.
Embodied Memories explores Hangul, the Korean alphabet, as an embodied and relational language through modular wearable artefacts. Originating from experiences of non-verbal communication with the artist’s hearing-impaired aunt, the project approaches gesture and movement as fundamental forms of language. Drawing on Hangul’s geometric structure, linguistic principles are translated into a modular system that functions as words, sculptural forms, or wearable objects. The artefacts combine Korean textiles such as Mosi (ramie) and Oksa (silk) with transparent acrylic structures, magnetic connections, and traditional techniques including Gamchimgil hand-stitching and Pusae (rice starch stiffening). Meaning emerges through bodily movement, touch, and reconfiguration.
