Afro – Stigma: Mental Health is a project that communicates the issues of mental health and the lack of care in some African countries towards the subject. It derives from the idea that having mental health problems is a taboo in some cultures and communities which has created a significant rise in people, from young adults to the elderly, not being able to speak on their issues or seek support. I illustrated this concept through an editorial concertina book with a series of patterned images to display the facts of the mental health care problems in African countries and 5 3D printed African masks to serve as a symbol of strength. The outcome of this project is to raise awareness and encourage viewers to speak out and even spark a wider conversation about the mental health issues in Africa . These 3D printed masks will make people feel inspired and empowered through the cultural history of the African masks as well. My project redefines the purpose and meaning behind African masks as I use new techniques to modernise and link it to mental health.
