Kay is fond of the idea of cherished objects.
She is a material-based artist and researcher that employs various materials. Proposing the potentials of materials in becoming tangible forms and crafted objects, she shows how materials are taken care of throughout the process.
Long Story 2026 Wood, yarn A tangible form of a thinking process and a dialogue between curated materials, this work explores inkle weaving as both structure and metaphor. In the warp-faced technique, the weft remains mostly hidden, silently holding the form together underneath the visible surface. Yarns sourced from Japan, Mexico, and other places stay close to the maker’s hands, carrying traces of their origins while becoming part of a new composition. The materials came together through chance encounters and a series of intuitive decisions, allowing unexpected potentials to emerge. Rather than being gathered for a predetermined project, many of the materials were already present, waiting to be rediscovered and understood through use. Through the fingertips into an object, which then finds its way back to the environment again. The practice of craft is one of interconnection: between material and body, environment and society, thought and action. Craft extends beyond the production of a physical object – it shapes the ways we relate to the world around us and to one another. The exhibition Being / Becoming presents works by the first year students of the Craft Studies MA program. Developed alongside one another over the past year, the works emerge through conversations between materials and makers, processes and practices, experiments and outcomes – shaped through sharing spaces of making, thinking and exchange. Being is existing in the same space with others. Becoming is an endless process of change until we decide to lay a pause on it.
