A harmonious song requires musicians to collaborate seamlessly. Loud, soft, gentle, or forceful—sometimes it requires composure, yet sometimes it calls for drama. Sometimes I perform tightly rehearsed pieces, and sometimes I improvise with my friends. As a musician and a designer, I am both delicate and bold, traditional and experimental. I bring these ideas into the physical space to create experiences that are meaningful and memorable. Hello, my name is Veronica Tsai—designer and artist based in Los Angeles, California.
My master’s thesis, Phantom Limbs: Design Interventions and Site-specific Storytelling explores how the power of site-specific design can be used to tell the forgotten stories of underrepresented communities. As designers, we have the responsibility to activate neglected places, bring hidden history to light, and expand notions of social value. Focused on Pasadena, I selected several sites where displacements of communities occurred. I explored site-specific, projection-mapped environmental graphics at various scales by projecting statements and facts that reveal the history of these sites and their previous communities.
Personal embroidery projects that utilize mixed media.
