Soyeon Lee is a Korean artist working primarily through drawing on Tyvek. Her practice explores perception, sensation, and the nature of flatness. She works with unconventional surfaces, using physical processes of layering, marking, and resistance to investigate how images and sensations are formed. Lee received her MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2026.
2025, mixed media on Tyvek, 152 × 285cm (60 × 112in.) These Tyvek works explores the flatness of Tyvek through its resistance, tension, and shifting surface.
2025, pencil, conte, pastel, charcoal and staple on stained fabric, 160 × 190cm (63 × 75in.) This work explores the surface as both presence and void. Fabric on the floor gathers marks, shadows, and traces of past actions. Folding, wrinkling, and stapling stretch and pierce the surface, making it fragile yet alive. Gestures and murmurs blur the line between language and image. The imagery appears when an image gives up being an image, fleeting and elusive. It is not an illusion of reality, but a phenomenon in its own shadow. These fabric and paper works explores flatness through fabric and paper, where marks, folds, and traces transform the surface.
