About

I have always loved exploring new materials that can be used in unpredictable ways. Subjects that I most enjoy are figurativism and portraiture, as there is always an undeniable truth to the human experience. My main working method is using pins or nails with thread or string to depict something in a realistic manner. This method is called ‘Constellations’, through which my aim is to represent a form by connecting the nails with string. With each line connection, the thread builds up a tone or shadow. The layering and tactile representation that forms, allows me to explore the more multi-dimensional depths of the image. I am drawn to this method as one can appreciate my work from different positions, up close and afar, merging the abstract with realism. The ‘Constellations’ have patterned sharp tones, elevating the features that normally have certain textures. Just as astrology can be seen as relating to someone's personality, some of the ‘Constellations’ can be read as a metaphor, the connected points constructing the portrait’s features. This is similar to the electronic interactions of atoms with their protons and electrons, or neurons that weave themselves in our brains to hold the memory of someone we know. The ‘Constellations’ are about the small but important connections that inform one’s existence.

My main method uses layers of thread that weave between nails to depict an image in a lifelike manner, creating works I call Constellations. Each line builds up a tone or shadow producing multi-dimensional shapes and forms. I mainly apply this technique to portraiture yet also produced works that verge on more conceptual interpretations. Through my Constellations, I try to illustrate the feeling of the small but important connections that informs one’s existence. Each nail and piece of thread merge together like brush strokes producing an intricate and delicate representation of something greater than the individual components. I am drawn to this approach as one can appreciate my work from different positions, up close and afar, merging the abstract component with the realism of the larger image. Seeing my Constellations in a real-life setting lets viewers understand the material relationship between the elements used in construction.

n this series, I refer to my Ukrainian heritage, which has had a profound impact on my art. My work interweaves the country’s textiles, language, history, story-telling, and much else. Presenting this theme in a contemporary way through a variety of media such as painting, ceramics and nail and thread. I have set out to celebrate Ukraine’s national culture yet simultaneously highlight the darker element that references the suffering the country has experienced since the Russian invasion.
