Sona Kharel is an interdisciplinary artist based in London. She completed her Bachelors in jewelry at Pratt Institute with a minor in Psychology and recently completed her Masters in Jewellery and Metals at Royal College of Art. She has also won awards such as the Artist Prize in Lip Lines, Barcelona and is currently doing a group exhibition at Hypha Studios in London through South East Asian artist association called Shoes Off. Sona has exhibits her work internationally in North America, Europe and United Kingdom. Her practice lies between being a designer and an artist, which pushes and scrutinizes the boundary of contemporary jewellery. Her underlying theme is mostly about understanding the relationship between jewellery and the body through emotions, bodily wear and tear, and the crevices of the human body.
Sona's thesis research investigates the distinction between loneliness and solitude through the framework of her body. Drawing from Buddhist concepts of detachment and impermanence, she undertook a ten-day meditation retreat to examine how bodily sensations shape emotional and psychological states. Experimentation through the materiality of silver, allowed the her to capture both skin textures and representations of sensations she felt on her body during the retreat. The resulting works materialize the shifting boundary between loneliness and solitude, transforming internal experiences into wearable forms.
