About
Simon Johannesson (b. 1999) is a photographer based in Gothenburg. He often works from a documentary perspective, whether his subject are pizzerias or virtual worlds. In addition to his Bachelor of Arts in Photography from HDK-Valand, Johannesson also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Jönköping University.
Sunset Bar explores the virtual bar with the same name. It is one of many user-created worlds on the social virtual platform VRChat, where Simon Johannesson aim to treat this virtual space as any other place. The video work is presented through the "Pepper's ghost" illusion, creating an immersive and intimate experience for the viewer. The film consists of documentation of the space and interviews with its visitors. What's the difference between a virtual bar and a physical one? How do we behave in the virtual space compared to the world we already know?
