I’m Seren O’Toole, an Irish illustrator and printmaker based in Manchester. My practice centres around mono-screen printing and is influenced by growing up in the West of Ireland.
I’m interested in memory, everyday life and our connection to the places around us. I often use familiar imagery and overlooked landscapes as starting points for my work, drawing on memories of growing up in the West of Ireland and my experience of living in Manchester.
I work directly onto the screen, building up layers and textures through an experimental process. I like the unpredictability of printmaking and the small imperfections that make each print feel individual. My work sits between illustration and fine art, using print to explore places, memories and the feeling of belonging.
Rooted in the experiences of growing up in rural Ireland, the project explores overlooked landscapes that often go unnoticed, using memory and familiar surroundings as a way of revisiting place. Each print brings together fragments of place, combining details and impressions that reflect the way places are remembered rather than exactly as they appear. Using a material-led approach to mono-screen printing, layers of texture and mark-making are built up to create depth and variation. Embracing the immediacy and unpredictability of the process allows each print to develop as a unique outcome.
