About
Scarlett is a Material Researcher and Designer investigating environmental and social narratives embedded within industrial systems. Working across design and material innovation, their practice explores the hidden impacts of mining, mineral processing, and global supply chains, questioning the systems that shape our material world.
Through research-led experimentation with industrial by-products and overlooked resources, Scarlett reimagines material possibilities. Their work utilises material residues for processed outcomes that challenge conventional ideas of transparency and regeneration while highlighting the relationship between extraction/consumption and environments.
After Extraction is a material research project investigating the analysis and remediation of toxic waste embedded into landscapes by extractive industries. Situated within a post-industrial mining landscape in Cornwall UK, the project focuses on deposited heavy metals that continue to pollute the environment today - long after mining and processing activities ceased in the area during 1980s. Through solidification and stabilisation research using adjacent industrial by-products, such as Slag, a geopolymer material is formed capable of immobilising contaminates. The resulting sculpture shows that toxic waste can be chemically contained and re-engineered. By utilising these industrial waste streams for remediation and emerging material systems, After Extraction proposes circular innovation for Industrial residues.
