From Cypress Waste to a New Natural Material and a Specialized Production System

From the Earth to the Earth, CY-PRESS is inspired by the cypress tree as a symbol of stability, continuity, and memory in the local landscape. The research explores the potential of green cypress pruning waste, combining it with other natural ingredients to create a novel natural composite material. Alongside the material development, a dedicated production method and specialized tools were designed, transforming an overlooked resource into a series of functional products with exceptional strength, durability, and sensory qualities. At the end of their lifecycle, these products are designed to return to nature.

Material Research & Development
The final material developed through the research: strong, pressure-resistant, repeatable in production, and characterized by the natural texture and distinctive scent of cypress.
Modular Wall Tiles- a single repeated form that can be arranged in different configurations, highlighting both the material’s functional potential and its natural visual character.
Floor tiles were designed and made to explore the material’s ability to withstand pressure and repeated use, while demonstrating its potential for consistent production as a functional modular system.
CY-PRESS Stool-the stool was designed with a quiet form that places the material itself at the center, revealing its natural texture, surface details, and visual character. The stool was tested through use by people of different weights
The material was further explored through additional functional objects, including a wall-mounted coat hanger and a floor lamp.
Developing a Dedicated Production System A dedicated production system was developed alongside the material, including a custom-built manual press, specialized molds, and additional tools designed to support the forming and production process.
Custom Molds for Product Manufacturing Custom molds were designed and built according to the geometry of each product, using a wooden outer frame with 3D-printed internal components that define the product’s form and details.
CY-PRESS can be worked using conventional woodworking tools and processes, including cutting, sanding, and drilling.
