Riichiro Yamamoto is a Japanese artist and architectural designer based in London. His practice is rooted in the Great East Japan Earthquake and explores how physical matter records and carries memory across time. He approaches built environments and landscapes as recording vessels that outlive human lives, accumulating traces of people and culture across generations. Moving fluidly between analogue and digital, tangible and intangible forms, his work spans conceptual art, moving image, digital reconstruction, and spatial practice, situating fragile human memories within geological processes to reconsider our relationship with the environment. His work was selected for exhibition at Oita Art Festival in 2022, Milan Design Week 2026, and London Design Festival in 2026.
Phantoming Waves is a research-led project exploring how landscapes shaped by anticipated disaster can be sensed, remembered and transmitted across time. Developed through fieldwork in Kochi, Japan, where communities live with the predicted Nankai Trough earthquake and tsunami, the project combines seismic sensing, sound, 3D scanning and speculative storytelling. During the experimental phase, Tectosonic Renderer translated real-time ground movement into sound, vibration and light, exploring the Earth as a continuously moving presence. These investigations informed Nai no Do, a short film imagining a future pilgrimage through which memories of disaster are carried across generations.
