On fluctuation: regulating indoor temperature with phase change material
On Fluctuation explores how materials can help regulate indoor temperature in a more energy‑efficient way. The project uses phase change materials (PCM), which naturally absorb and release heat as they melt and solidify. Through research and prototyping, the work develops a hanging artefact that contains salt‑hydrate PCM and reacts to temperature changes in public interior spaces. As the PCM melts, the module opens and becomes translucent, increasing its surface area for heat exchange; as it cools, it closes and turns opaque. The project shows how material‑driven design can support passive thermal regulation while enriching the atmosphere of shared interiors.
