I’m Olivia Stribbling, an Interior Design graduate interested in creating immersive spaces that explore our relationship with the natural environment and our sensory experiences. My work focuses on atmosphere, materiality, movement and light, exploring how interior spaces can influence how we feel and interact with our surroundings.
My final project, developed in response to Thetford Forest, explores how silence can be translated into a spatial experience, creating moments of stillness, reflection and mental clarity. Through research, physical modelling and spatial experimentation, I explore how interior design can encourage people to slow down and become more aware of their surroundings.
My project explores how interior design can materialise silence through a sensory journey in Thetford Forest. Inspired by my dissertation research into silence, the design responds to the contrast between mental noise and clarity. Visitors move through a series of spaces that encourage them to slow down, pause, look, listen and breathe. The surrounding trees become an important part of the experience, beginning tall and dense before gradually becoming shorter, symbolising the dissipation of noise and the emergence of silence and mental clarity. Light, fog, materiality and movement work together to create an immersive environment for reflection and stillness.
