About

Hello, my name is Okke. I am 24 years old and graduated last academic year with a degree in Object and Jewellery Design.

Before studying jewellery design, I studied Interior Architecture. Although I eventually shifted towards jewellery, my fascination with interior spaces and, more specifically, objects has never disappeared. Because of this, my jewellery practice often moves between objects that are wearable on the body and objects intended for a space. I am also interested in the object itself, without necessarily giving it a specific predetermined function.

My practice quickly developed into a fascination with reused and discarded materials. My graduation project focused on reusing materials from our everyday lives, such as plastic, electronics, and copper as a conductor within architecture, electronics, and many other aspects of our lives. What these materials have in common is that they are heavily exploited for human benefit. I find it important to draw more attention to this, and I think I can say that this fascination is something that will stay with me throughout my life.

My work has consciously and unconsciously always leaned towards the conceptual side. At the same time, I also enjoy making jewellery with a personal significance, although I have never felt comfortable asking very high prices for these pieces. I am looking for a middle ground between personal adornment, accessibility, and sustainability.

Experimenting with different techniques and materials has been a major part of my four years of study. I have worked with techniques such as silversmithing, etching, 3D modelling, laser cutting and engraving textiles and organic materials, casting, mould making, and pressing metals.

My next step is an internship with a goldsmith in Antwerp, where I hope to further strengthen and develop my practice, while gaining more experience with traditional goldsmithing techniques.

Silent Belongings

Specialisms:

Jewelry

Silent Belongings explores the relationship between humans and materials by transforming discarded objects into wearable technofossils: human-made materials and objects that leave lasting traces of our time. The project consists of three pendants, four boxes, and a series of brooches, combining copper, plastic, electronic remnants, and found objects. Copper is hand-pressed and etched with references to technological language, while plastic is remelted and vacuum-formed into new shapes. By freeing objects from their original function, the project creates a collection between jewellery and archaeological artefacts. Inspired by new materialism, Silent Belongings reflects on consumption, sustainability, materiality, and the traces humans leave behind.
