Hi,
I am Netta Solway, an industrial designer based in Tel Aviv focused on the intersection of design, science, and multi-species urban ecology. My work explores how the built environment can actively integrate local wildlife through bio-inspired systems. In my capstone project, Urban Bark, I developed a multi-species wildbox designed for building facades to provide habitats for local urban fauna - such as swifts, bats, geckos, and wasps - mitigating the ecological disruption caused by rapid urban regeneration.
Urban Bark is a multi-species wildbox shelter designed for building façades and vertical infrastructure, addressing the ecological disruption caused by rapid urban renewal. Grounded in biomimetic principles, the system provides protected nesting and roosting sites for local urban fauna—including the common swift, Kuhl’s pipistrelle (a small insectivorous bat), the common house gecko, and the mud dauber wasp. Crafted from durable cedar wood and a stainless steel detail, the design functions as an intriguing visual element that mitigates public apprehension. Ultimately, Urban Bark bridges the gap between architecture and urban ecology, fostering positive community engagement and a harmonious coexistence between residents and city wildlife.
