Mohan Yang is a fashion and textile designer and a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). His work explores the relationship between clothing, material, memory, and everyday life, with a strong focus on textile experimentation and craftsmanship. Through techniques including embroidery, fabric manipulation, knitting, and hand-developed surface treatments, he approaches textiles not simply as materials, but as a central part of storytelling and design. His practice moves between fashion, textile development, and fiber art, with an interest in bringing traditional craft techniques into a contemporary context.
Grandma soup
Grandmother’s Soup is a fashion collection inspired by my grandmother and Chinese family life from the 1950s–70s. The project explores how ordinary people created beauty, care, and order within difficult circumstances. Familiar materials and memories—striped bed sheets, floral fabrics, aprons, sleeve protectors, and military coats—are reinterpreted through contemporary silhouettes and textile development. Techniques including cut-pile textiles, embroidery, beading, fabric manipulation, and handcrafted floral elements transform traces of everyday life into material narratives. Rather than relying on recognizable cultural symbols, the collection approaches Chinese memory through texture, color, craftsmanship, and intimate domestic experiences.
