Mel Joubert is a South African-born visual artist based in Wiltshire, UK. Working across printmaking, photography, collage and installation, her practice explores identity and the ways it is shaped by memory, inherited histories and lived experience.
Her work often begins through processes of fragmentation, layering and reconstruction, using print and photographic imagery as a way of questioning how meaning is formed and re-formed. Increasingly, her practice extends print beyond the two-dimensional surface through objects, artists' books and interactive installation.
She is currently completing an MA Fine Art: Printmaking at UWE Bristol. Her current body of work, the box child, explores inherited identity and the ways the stories, beliefs and histories we receive before we are able to question them continue to shape how we see ourselves and the world.
The box child is an installation-based body of work exploring inherited identity: the stories, beliefs and histories we receive before we are able to question them, and how these continue to shape the way we see ourselves and the world. Developed through printmaking, photography, photomontage, artists’ books, sculpture and interactive installation, the project brings archival and personal imagery into a series of constructed objects and three interactive boxes. Each box asks a different question about seeing, shaping and becoming, inviting the viewer to participate rather than simply observe. The work considers inheritance not as something fixed, but as something we can examine, keep, resist or remake.
