The collection is a vision of fashion on the terraformed planet of Mars in the year 7001. To avoid mass extinction, humanity may turn to space to save themselves from an irreversible, environmental crisis. It is set in the early stages of a new society on Mars. The collection raises questions which encourage openminded thinking towards space exploration and its relationship to fashion in the distant future. Mars: the year 7001 is designed to withstand the terraformed environment of the planet, taking into consideration weather conditions in a specific season. Based on futuristic thinking, the collection looks back to the 1960s to gain inspiration from other designers who have become immersed in the concept of designing for a future in space. It also considers influential figures from this era who popularised other-worldly fashion. The collection contemplates how issues such as equality will translate in a multiplanetary society, and represents the progress previously made to resolve these issues on Earth. The collection aims to alters Earths existing Fashion calendar to align with the duration of Mars’ seasons, combating the overproduction of clothing we see today.
