My name is Jenny Trotter, I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Scotland, working across installation, painting, sculpture, drawing, film, and sound. My practice explores the relationship between physical and mental illness, memory, and the desire to escape reality, often drawing from personal experiences of chronic illness and prolonged hospitalisation.
Using recurring motifs such as windows, landscapes, and light, I create immersive works that investigate themes of confinement, resilience, hope, and healing. By combining traditional and contemporary processes—including painting, laser-etched glass, moving image, projection, and sculptural installation—I invite viewers to reflect on the emotional and psychological spaces that exist between suffering and recovery.
Alongside my artistic practice, I have developed a broad range of technical skills, including woodworking, metal casting, printmaking, digital media, and exhibition installation. My work aims to transform deeply personal experiences into spaces of connection, encouraging conversations around health, vulnerability, and the universal search for hope.
Beyond the frame’ 2026 Mixed media installation and moving image 500cm x266cm Duration - 5 minutes and 15 seconds The large-scale installation ‘Beyond the Frame’ is composed of reconstructed domestic window frames that transform the gallery into an immersive architectural environment. Projected across multiple panes, the film moves through three separate scenes: landscapes, hospital interiors, and the Northern Lights. Different sections of footage gradually fade in and out across the windows, creating fragmented viewpoints between reality and imagination. Contrasting clinical spaces with expansive natural environments, the work reflects the emotional tension between confinement and freedom while using light and landscape as symbols of hope and psychological escape.
2026 laser-cut glass, drawing series 45.5cm x 64cm A series of hand-drawn laser-cut glass works depicting scenes of home, ambulance journeys, and hospital beds. Activated through light and shadow, the interactive works require a torch to reveal the etched imagery. Translating hand-drawn imagery into fragile, translucent forms that evoke memory, absence, and vulnerability. Across the series, windows serve as recurring thresholds between confinement and possibility, guiding the gaze toward imagined spaces beyond reality.
2025- 2024 Mixed media installation and moving image 350cm x 200cm Duration of film - 3 minutes 45 seconds Parallel Lives is an immersive mixed-media installation comprising three reconstructed timber window frames with integrated structural beams, moving image, and sound. Exploring themes of confinement, memory, and imagined escape, the work transforms familiar architectural elements into an atmospheric environment, inviting viewers to engage with the shifting relationship between physical space and psychological experience.
