Hayley An is a graphic and motion designer who weaves solid visuals, storytelling, and cultural resonance into colorful output. Based between Shanghai and Los Angeles with 6+ years of experience, she is exploring branding, typography, and 2D/3D motion, usually dabbling in contrast: natural and digital, heritage and futurism. MFA in Graphic Design from the ArtCenter College of Design, doing entertainment, media, and technology for clients such as Google and NBA China through to Levels Infinite and SASA Coffee.
The Darkroom is a San Clemente–based mail-in film lab using traditional dip-and-dunk processing. With nearly 50 years of expertise, they’re a trusted industry leader. This rebrand builds trust for remote customers and strengthens an analog-first community through advocacy and education. Inspired by their process, the system fuses heritage and modern scalability. "Shapes in a shape" addresses film negatives and the act of hanging film, crafting a coherent identity that flexes through print, digital, and motion while promoting craft and community.
The project treats rhythm as a hidden language—present not only in music, but also in the layered relationships of shapes, forms, and colors. Although Los Angeles' club scene declined after the pandemic, music lovers shifted to the underground, sparking a more vibrant scene. Inspired by this phenomenon, the project conducts research and attempts to channel the energy of fused auditory experiences within specific spaces into graphic design, exploring more possibilities for the medium. CONCEPT Inspired by underground club culture, this project uses graphic design as a medium to explore how rhythm drives perception, motion, and energy, creating a multisensory experience. It aims to reinvent the possibilities of graphic design: treating design elements as audio tracks, layering effects, and mixing them to craft an immersive multisensory experience that redefines how we understand and practice creativity. EXECUTION including audio-visual interactive design, installation, and workshop prototype.
