About
Harry Compton (b.1997) is an MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography graduate from the London College of Communication (MAPJD) currently based in South-East London. He is available for editorial and commercial commissions.
With a background in Anthropology which he studied at the London School of Economics, Compton’s recent work through an ethnographic lens has investigated aspects of the ‘strangely familiar’ within the framework of coloniality detailing memory work from reflectively engaging through making imagery, handling family archive and research. Currently both the use of analogue and darkroom processes have been central to his practice and is intending to further explore alternative and wider processes through visual mediums specific to each project which is relevant to its production.
"The Sunny Side of the Island" investigates an ancestor and namesake Colonel Harry Compton, who was granted a township (20,000 acres) by King George III in Canada after his 1798 service in the Irish Rebellion. It explores themes of the ‘strangely familiar’, uncanny and the eerie while searching for an individual hidden in plain sight, connecting to colonial diaspora in new world settlements. The project analyses how figures like Colonel Harry Compton influence the island's legacy through descendants, institutions, and notable locations, shedding light on colonial remnants and what remains within the landscape.
