Frequently moving between China, Canada and France, Wen designs with inspiration from previous multidisciplinary experiences in sciences and acquisitions from travels, approaching garments with logic just as in an experiment or detective fiction. Self-considered world citizen, Wen discovers the forms that construct together narratives about humankind through his designs and follows his commitment to fashion as a means of artistic and cultural expression.
Wen’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘The Living Island’, draws inspiration from marine life and island topography, combining nature’s organic and geometric shapes with functional features like pockets and zippers. Using leftover fabrics and secondhand clothes sourced from a local thrift shop in the designer’s home of Montreal, Hanzhang employs waste-minimising techniques such as cutting tessellated patterns, creating texture and volume with irregular curved shapes, and using straight rectangular bands of fabric. Recycled duvets are used as stuffing, and detachable sleeves and legs add more styling possibilities. Monofibre materials make the garments recyclable, and the modular design makes it simple for wearers to repair parts with new pieces.
