About
My name is Gabriel, what I am passionate about in architectural design is designing for human and environmental experiences, to create spaces that evoke physical, emotional, social and psychological reactions and to use architecture as a medium to connect people with the natural landscape.
What also excites me about being an architectural designer in Australia is our rich cultural heritage that we are all part of and getting to know these cultures and design for and with them to contribute to the development of this rich cultural landscape.
‘Bulanaming’ is a project that reintegrates Country back into multicultural Marrickville, an inner western suburb of Sydney, in a way that is accessible to all and includes infrastructure that creates places of learning and community centred around the experience and growth of knowledge around Country. In its essence ‘Bulanaming' is a 'de-constructed' public realm that seeks to re-introduce the native wetland landscape that once thrived in the Marrickville area. When I derived my concept to reintegrate Country back on site, I reflected on what I had learnt from Indigenous community members, that Indigenous people are as much a part of Country as Country is a part of them, which informed my decision to design an Indigenous Co-operative apartment that offers residents strong connections to Country as well as provides flexibility to adapt to Indigenous family lifestyles and community building. Other tenures include built-to-rent combined with co-work to cater for young families in need of a flexible work-life balance, as well as social housing. The social infrastructure designed for the ground-level public domain also mirrors these values with landscaping that works with Country, whilst catering to the needs of the ever-growing, diverse community of Marrickville and providing job opportunities for locals. This includes markets, a community centre, a suburban nursery, an Indigenous cultural centre as well as food and beverage venues. This project aims to reconcile Country with community.
