Emilie Tizien is a French-Dutch photographer, filmmaker and a bachelor's graduate at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Rooted in an upbringing in the south of France, shaped by nature and community life, her work draws on observations from both human behavior in public and natural spaces.
Deeply drawn to the bodily experience as a way of making sense of the world, she reflects on how we apprehend natural environments and relate to living beings, guided by a sensitive approach. As well as a reflection on how we choose to live and spend our time. Conversations and encounters with other people are at the core of her work as sources of inspiration, research or as subjects.
Adopting an anthropological perspective, she uses photography as a tool for investigation and for sharing her understanding. Working across photography, moving image, and book-making, she combines digital and analog processes, with a strong emphasis on materiality and storytelling.
The work Vivant! starts by stepping away from the overwhelming pace of the city and finding a sense of grounding in the mountains. The work explores how being in this natural landscape, enables a presence and vulnerability that questions our place in the world. This serves as well as an invitation to spend more time in nature. In conversation with inhabitants of these mountains, the work investigates our emotional responses to the landscape. Being confronted with such an environment compels us to look inward. It invites us to pause, to observe, and to perceive deeply.
