Banita Mistry is is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work is an exploration of technology’s impact on our sense of identity, spirituality, environment, and community. Banita’s current work explores the smart phone and the profound multiplicities embedded within this highly recognisable everyday object, presenting avenues to consider the changing perceptions of value and identity. Banita’s craft has moved from jewellery to painting and sculpture, instigated by her recognition that the smartphone’s relationship with the body and its impact on human condition could be explored with greater poetry, and urgency, through art.
My work explores technology’s impact on our sense of identity, environment, and community. In this project I focussed on the smartphone and its form - a device that is so prolific that it is almost invisible. Through its recognisable design I looked at the profound multiplicities embedded within this highly recognisable everyday object, to make one pause, double-take, and possibly consider how these objects have so dramatically changed our perception. I believe that the smartphone’s relationship with the body and its impact on human condition can be explored with greater poetry, and urgency through art.
