I moved from Devon to Kingston to study fashion design.
My practice draws on imagery from my travels and adventures both locally and abroad as a means to instil the energy and wonder of the outdoors.Growing up exploring and enjoying the landscape has made me appreciative of the technical and functional detail of the kit made to withstand it. Specifically the innovation of military design has become a great interest to me, helping to inform the perceived purpose of the clothes I make. Camouflage acts as an abstract representation of these environments and the shapes within them, also becoming symbolic of the origins of the work.
Narrative drives the initial process of design, reliving and composing anew with my imagery to bring meaning and imagination to the origins of my work. Diaristic scrap books, collages, and world building ephemera such as maps and handbooks help to strengthen the concept and allow me to share ideas in a tangible way with others.
I believe that to design responsibly we must approach the materials already before us, learning to make use of what we have and what we can find as a response to overconsumption and needless waste. Following through with this, all materials in my graduate collection are sourced from a multitude of places. Some are donated or bought dead stock. Ripstop from various parachutes has been repurposed many a time, alongside reuse of other military surplus items, even material scavenged directly fro the Devon coastline has become core to the collection's fabric board. While constricted to the colours and quantities of these materials, I feel this method creates new and interesting results by overcoming these problems.
This is SOMEWHERE. The project roots itself in the environments that I have experienced, driven by a narrative imagined from the photographs I have taken along the way. Military references are at the core of the garments' designs, taking function and form to propose a purpose born out of the requirements of each landscape. Materialised through repurposing of surplus items and dead stock fabrics, even scavenged materials from the coast, which creates unique stories for each piece and takes responsibility for the origins of the collection's resources. An affinity with the landscape is further portrayed through the use of print and textile manipulation, taking a camouflaged theme to pay homage to the natural world from which the collection hails.
