My name is Amy Cottrell, I am a Melbourne based fashion designer and graduate from Whitehouse Institute of Design in Fashion design. I aim to create unique pieces by merging the use of unusual and recycled materials and innovative construction techniques and technologies with traditional artisanal techniques. With sustainability forming the foundation of my work, I embrace the use of texture and the art of embellishment, innovation and new materials to create feminine, seductive pieces that have a daring, modern edge.
Plasticity explores our relationship with the man-made substance that was once strongly associated with progress and is now held responsible for major environmental damage. In nature, plasticity describes how organisms have the ability to adapt, changing their form and function, to fit into a harsh and challenging world. It is now essential that we learn to adjust to new conditions associated with climate change. In order to survive the use of plastics also needs to radically change as we move forwards. The collection explores the use of recycled and repurposed plastics and bioplastic to create beautiful feminine garments, redefining the use of plastics within the modern world. Plasticity embraces a balance between fluidity, movement and freedom with an underlying structure, rigidity and constraint which provides protection, taking cues from the hard exteriors of insects combined with the beauty of movement, Plasticity provides an edgy elegance in its unique custom pieces.
