About

Graphic Design & Art DirectionFor me, the strength of design lies in its ability to address important questions, big or small, and act as catalyst for change through visual creations.Throughout my design career, my inquisitive drive has pushed me to roll up my sleeves and seek out what makes brands soar and stories come alive.

The aim of this case study is to harness the experiential power of data visualization by demonstrating the complex and dynamic intersection that exists among all spoken human languages and their vocalized constituents in visual form. It culminated in an exhibition that features a visual network, representing the 44 core sounds of the English language system, and an interactive visual of the mechanics of its sound production. Based on the International Phonetic Association, the constituents of ~7,100 languages can be distilled into 107 sound symbols. In practice, The Matrix of Language utilizes sonic mapping to show how sounds are integral in forming and navigating linguistic systems, revealing the interconnectedness of languages visually, and translating their complex sonic features and nuances into comprehensible shapes, hues, sizes, and locations. Through research, discovery, exploration, and creation, this visual system of graphical guide provide an approachable tool for learning to pronounce words in new languages, empowering people to have agency over their linguistic journeys.
