About
I’m Sarah McGath, an Irish fashion and textile designer and a 2026 First Class Honours graduate in Fashion with Applied Textiles.My work explores the relationship between Irish heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary fashion. I have a particular interest in working with traditional Irish materials such as linen, wool and Aran knitwear, reinterpreting them through experimental textile processes and modern silhouettes.Textile manipulation is central to my practice, particularly Shibori pleating, which I use to transform the structure, movement and surface of fabric. I’m interested in the contrast between traditional materials and more unconventional processes, creating pieces that feel rooted in Irish craft while pushing them into a contemporary context.I have worked with designers and brands including Paradox Paris, Julia Heuer, Colin Horgan and Pellador, with recent work including pieces designed for Pellador and worn on stage by Kneecap.My work is driven by strong silhouettes, material experimentation and the idea of taking something familiar and transforming it into something unexpected.
The Black Sheep is my graduate collection exploring identity, belonging and the experience of existing outside of convention. Rooted in Irish heritage, the collection reinterprets traditional materials, including Irish linen and wool, through contemporary silhouettes and experimental textile processes. Techniques including Shibori pleating, screen printing and fabric manipulation are used throughout the collection to transform familiar materials and create new textures, forms and movement. Inspired by ideas of protection, armour and the tension between tradition and rebellion, The Black Sheep celebrates individuality and finding strength in being different, while exploring how Irish craft, materials and heritage can be reimagined within a contemporary fashion context.
