Hi! I’m Alyssa Payad, a communication design graduate from Swinburne University with a passion for wrangling ideas, artsy touches and empathetic design. My experience spans branding, packaging, digital design, and creative campaigns across both studio and e-commerce environments. Through these experiences, I have developed confidence in strategic thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and studio-driven workflows. I enjoy using audience insights to inform design decisions and create work that feels relevant, engaging, and purposeful. I’m curious by nature and passionate about experimenting, celebrating process, and continuously expanding my creative repertoire. I’m always eager to learn, tackle new challenges, and contribute to projects that create meaningful connections through design.
This publication is a typographic interpretation of Lokele drum language, a form of communication in which instrumental tone and rhythm become a surrogate for human speech. Drawing from John F. Carrington’s 1949 Talking Drums of Africa alongside contemporary scholarship, the project explores cultural knowledge and intricate linguistic structures that shape traditional languages. As drums represent the identity and collective voice of their communities, the rhythm of the typography mirrors their resilience, unity and continuity throughout colonisation and commercialisation. Serving as a scholarly resource, exhibition publication and cultural artefact, the work offers an accessible introduction to African drum language, linguistics and culture.
