I’ve always been drawn to both the creative and technical sides of problem solving. I’ve enjoyed art and design from an early age, but was equally interested by physics, maths, and understanding how things actually work. I’m a 2026 graduate in Product Design Engineering from the University of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art, with a passion for creating thoughtful, human-centred products that make a real-world difference.I’m especially passionate about medical device design, where good design and engineering can have a meaningful impact on people’s lives.For my final-year project, I designed a low-cost ultrasound device, bringing together user research, CAD modelling, prototyping, mechanical engineering to explore how medical technology could be made more accessibleI’m excited to take these skills into my career and create products that solve real world problems.
SONARC - Portable Ultrasound for Accessible Healthcare
Sonarc explores how ultrasound technology can be made significantly more affordable without compromising its usefulness. Modern ultrasound systems use increasingly complex technology to produce highly detailed images, but in many situations, this level of imaging isn’t necessary. This creates an opportunity for a simpler approach. I developed a stripped-back ultrasound system designed around the essential requirements for basic imaging. With existing portable systems typically costing over £5,000, Sonarc has an estimated manufacturing cost of around £240, making it a potentially much more accessible alternative. The project involved extensive prototyping and testing, from developing the physical system to refining the user experience. The result is a working proof of concept that demonstrates the feasibility of the approach.
